Custom Mantel – Part 1

Written by .

Custom Mantel Part 1Over the next couple of months I plan on building a custom mantel for our new home. In my previous home I built a mantel and I’d like to do something similar but more elaborate. Currently the gas fireplace is already in place along with a granite surround and elevated hearth (see the photo).

So far my challenge seems to be designing a mantel that will look proportional giving the height it will have in the room. The elevated hearth makes the final height of the mantel shelf a little higher than you would typically see.

I plan on using a combination of MDF, FJP pine and assorted mouldings. I hope to keep the style similar to the rest of the houses traditional colonial feel. As I make progress on the design and construction I will continue to post pictures and discuss any issues I run into.
