Fall Leaf Cleanup

leaf+hog Fall Leaf CleanupI hate to say it but Fall is quickly approaching and here in New England that means piles and piles of leaves to cleanup in our yards. Our first home had several huge oak trees in the yard that produced so many leaves that the thought of raking them all up used to drive me insane. Then a friend showed me a cool tool he bought for cleaning up his leaves.

That tool, the Black & Decker Leaf Hog, is a really cool leaf blower and vacuum. When you convert the unit to the vacuum it mulches the leaves by a ratio of 10 to 1. You can either have the mulched leaves fill the attached bag or you can buy the Leaf Collection System which allows you to attach the vacuum to a standard trash can.

For just under $125 for the complete system this tool really does a great job. It doesn’t clog easily unless you’re trying to suck up branches and limbs. My only complaint is I wish the thing was gas powered. It’s not exactly handy to use if you have a really large yard where you need 500 feet of extension chords.

So if you’re looking for an easier way to up up your leaves and mulch them at the same time then I recommend you check this unit out. I’ve been very happy with it and I’ve been using mine now for over 5 years.

I tend to go to Consumer Reports for all of these types of purchases. I recently purchased the electric Toro Ultra Blower Vac 51599. It was given the best rating of any blower/vac, even the gas powered ones. I’ve been extremely happy with it.

And given I use a 100% wind generated electric utility, it’s green, too!
