I would like to mention that there is a pretty good variety of clips out there on the market.  Some are definitely easier to use than others and are a lot more versatile in how they can be applied.  The easiest way to figure out what would be the best for your situation would be to get down to Target or something similar.  Check out the clips they have in stock and see what is suitable.  I have seen some Christmas light installer use the actual clips on the bulb sockets.  These also vary a lot as well.
