How To Save Electricity

picture of electric meterSaving energy is on everyone’s mind these days. As hard as we try to turn off lights that we’re not using it seems our electric bill continues to increase. One of the reasons our electric bill continues to grow is our increased use of consumer electronic devices; televisions, computers, printers, DVD and stereo components and many others.

All of these consumer electronics continue to use electricity even when we “shut” them off. So you may be saying that they can’t really use that much electricity if they are “off” the answer is it depends. Some electronics can use a fairly significant amount of power.

So if you’re curious about finding out how much power your electronics are using when you turn them off then I suggest you buy yourself a Kill A Watt Electricity Usage Monitor. You can plug your electronics and appliances into the monitor to find out exactly how much electricity they use. You can compare how much power is being used when they are turned on and off to get a very good estimate of potential savings.

Once you’ve figured out which electronics and appliances are using the most electricity when they are turned off then I suggest you connect them to the Smart Strip SCG3/049418906 Energy Saving Power Strip with Autoswitching Technology. This revolutionary power strip that senses the flow of electrical current and completely shuts down power to connected devices when you’re not using them. The Smart Strip power strip is a great way to finally reduce the amount of wasted electricity that we use from the growing number of consumer electronics in our homes.

One of the other great ways to save electricity in your home is by installing compact fluorescent light bulbs in your home. Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL’s) use about 25% of the electricity that standard light bulbs use. I recently made the switch to CFL’s and the change has been significant. Check out my post on Are CFL’s Really Cheaper?. You’ll be really amazed at the electricity savings that you can realize by switching over to CFL’s.
