Mulching Flower Beds

Mulching Flower Beds with Ask This Old House

This week we started mulching the flower beds with pine bark mulch. We have quite a few new flower beds that really don’t have many flowers in them yet but getting the mulch down is a start. I guess I’m partial to pine bark mulch from a past experience. Back in the Spring of 2004 the crew of Ask This Old House came to our house to film an episode of the show. Roger Cook the landscaping expert was the guest and he helped us re-edge our flower beds. As part of the show they also mulched all the flower beds. He used pine bark mulch so ever since I’ve been stuck on it.

The other reason I chose pine bark mulch is we have a huge stock of it at work and it’s all recycled. When we clear land and cut down tress the trees themselves are sent to a saw mill and we chip all the limbs and branches. After the limbs and branches are chipped we put them through a tub grinder to produce bark mulch. At any rate I like the fact that I’m using the mulch that we create from cutting down trees.
