12 Volt MAX Compact Lithium Two-Tool Kit (PCL212IDC-2)

Porter-Cable jumped into the compact 12 volt category this summer when they introduced the new 12 Volt MAX Lithium Cordless Tools. They recently sent us the 12 Volt MAX Two-Tool Kit (PCL212IDC-2) to test and evaluate. So here’s our review just in time for this exciting new product to hit the shelves at a dealer near you.

Porter-Cable PCL212IDC-2 Features

  • 3/8-inch 12 Volt MAX* Drill/Driver
  • 1/4-inch 12 Volt MAX* Compact Lithium Impact Driver
  • Two PCL12BLX Lithium batteries
  • PCL12C 30-minute charger
  • Soft-sided storage case
  • Metal belt clips and two Phillips #2 screw bits

3/8-Inch 12 Volt MAX Drill / Driver (PCL120DDC)

The 3/8-inch drill driver weighs only 2.4 lbs and includes two speed settings of 0-315 RPM and 0-1200 RPM. It includes a maximum torque of 220 in-lbs and a 30 minute charge time.

We tested the drill/driver installing miscellaneous screws and drilling holes in cabinet stiles. The drill/driver has an easy to use adjustable clutch and variable speed trigger. The drill/driver had no problems installing screws or drilling holes and felt comfortable in the hand.

The drill/driver has rubber bump pads on the sides so the tool won’t mark up work surfaces when you set it down.

1/4-Inch 12 Volt MAX Impact Driver (PCL120IDC)

The 1/4-inch impact driver weighs in at 2.6 lbs and produces 950 in-lbs of torque, a speed of 0-2400 RPM and a BPM of 0-2500.

Readers of this site know that Impact Drivers have become my tool of choice when it comes to driving fasteners. I just don’t pick up a drill/driver very often when I want to install a screw, lag or structural fastener. This 1/4-inch impact driver was able to consistently install 3-inch long deck screws quickly and efficiently. We tested the impact driver installing 3-inch long cabinet screws through the back of cabinets and 1-1/2 inch long screws through cabinet stiles with ease.

Both the drill/driver and impact drivers come with optional belt clips. The belt clip does hold the tool pretty well considering it’s not very well balanced in the factory mounted position.

Overall Impression

Overall we were impressed with the new Porter-Cable 12 Volt MAX Two-Tool Kit. Both tools have considerable power considering they are 12 volt tools. They also both have all the standard features that you’d expect from quality drill/drivers and impact drivers. If we had to point out one disappointment it would be the battery position. Like so many other 12 volt compact tools the battery is located in the base of the handle. We would have really liked seeing it mounted below the grip similar to full size tools and the recently introduced DEWALT 12 volt tool.

The battery pack issue is a small one which should not deter fans of Porter-Cable tools from giving the new 12 Volt MAX line serious consideration. These tools are great for contractors and DIY’ers as they provide a power solution for tight spaces and overhead work. If you’re looking to join the growing ranks of 12 volt compact tool owners this is a great set to own.

The tool is expected to role out this month in Lowe’s and other dealer locations. The kit is expected to cost approximately $119 which we feel is a very good value for two tools like this.
