Turning The Heat On For The First Time This Season
Heating Season Has Begun
It’s official folks….the heating season has begun here in New England and I reluctantly turned on the furnace this weekend. The temperatures have been dipping down into the 30’s over night recently and the house has been in the low 60’s, just too chilly for young children.
Furnace Maintenance
Before you turn the furnace on for the first time you should be sure that everything is in working order. Is your fuel tank full of fuel? Have you had your yearly maintenance performed on an oil burner if you own one? Has your flu been inspected recently? If you own a newer gas boiler is the vent outside free of debris?
Danger From Carbon Monoxide
It’s extremely important that you answer yes to many of these questions before you turn the heat on. Each year thousands of people are hurt and killed by carbon monoxide poisoning. The CDC has some great advice on protecting you and your family from the dangers of carbon monoxide.
Seal Up The House
- When you turn on the heat it’s a great time to make sure the house is sealed up. Be sure that all the windows are closed and latched. I also like to remove the insect screens at this time and store them for the winter.
- Make sure your attic stair door is properly sealed.
- Be sure any basement doors and bulkheads are sealed properly.
- Remove window air conditioners and seal air conditioning returns.
Save Energy With Programmable Thermostats
Lastly if haven’t been using a programmable thermostat then I highly recommend you install one. Programmable thermostats are a great way to save money on your heating and cooling bills next year.
