Exposed Aggregate Concrete Walkway

Exposed aggregate concrete makes a great walkway or driveway. Last year when we built the house we had a hard time figuring out what to use for the walkways from the driveway to the front of the house. We used asphalt pavement for the driveway because it’s really cost effective and easy to maintain. However, my wife really wasn’t impressed with the idea of installing asphalt walkways in the front of our new beautiful home. So the conversation turned to concrete walkways as a better more attractive solution. Today there are many decorative concrete products that allow home owners to express their creative side.

The two most popular choices available are stamped concrete and exposed aggregate. To put things in perspective asphalt driveways start around $1 per sq. foot and stamped concrete starts around $6 per sq. foot. The exposed aggregate concrete surface starts around $4 per sq. foot. So we decided to try the exposed aggregate concrete and we are really pleased. As you can see the surface of the concrete is exposed during the finishing process so that all the stones are visible. After the concrete has cured the surface is treated with a concrete sealer. The sealer helps bring out the colors in the stones and also protects the concrete from the environment.
So next time you’re thinking about a new walkway I highly recommend looking into exposed aggregate concrete as a cost effective aesthetic solution. If you need other suggestions why not check out some walkway ideas.
