Icicles Tell Which House Has Enough Insulation

By Todd Fratzel on Insulation

Icicles Hanging From RoofI’ve been writing about ice dams and attic insulation quite a bit lately because of the weather. I’ve also pointed out that you can tell when a house doesn’t have sufficient insulation. I ran across two photos yesterday that really tell the story better than I can write it.

The folks over at Bangor Bungalow were kind enough to let me share these photos with you. Check out their site sometime as it’s one that I enjoy reading on a regular basis.

Anyway, if you look at these photos you’ll see a huge difference between the house on the left and the house on the right. The house on the left has almost no icicles while the house on the right is covered in them. Both houses are facing the same direction towards the Ice dam on neighbor housesun and they both have similar roofs. What these photos tell me is the house on the left has MUCH better attic insulation and ventilation.
